And We’re Off!

August 18th, 2009 by chamber

We filled the Hjemkomst parking lot with excited kids, proud parents and community leaders Monday afternoon to celebrate our first Youth Leadership Pay It Forward Tour.

Valley News Live Video!

After words of encouragement and congratulations from city and state leaders, Greg Tehven, co-founder of Students Today Leaders Forever, pumped up the crowd by reminding us that the students we were celebrating are not the leaders of tomorrow, but the leaders of today!

As parents and supporters waved, and bus horns honked, our Youth Leadership students departed for their 5-day adventure. Nervous excitment filled the buses, and it didn’t take long for complete silence to turn into boisterous chatter of questions… What school do you go to? What are your plans for college? …and then later broke out into a dance party or two as the bus cruised past Grand Forks and into Devils Lake.

Our evening began with teambuilding activities and icebreakers at our new home for the night, River of Life Church in Devils Lake. Students managed to get themselves out of human knots, learn the names of their fellow busmates, and set some goals for the trip. Wake up call is 6 a.m. tommorow, and lights out are at midnight. Tommorow we are heading into town to help repair and paint some local playground equipment. Thanks to all of our supporters for sending us off in style yesterday! Keep checking back for updates!

Tidbit of the day: Our bus driver is named Lyndon Johnson… Seriously, like the president!
