Metropolitan Flood Protection
November 20th, 2009 by chamberOn November 19, 2009, the Chamber of Commerce of Fargo Moorhead Board of Directors declared:
The Chamber advocates building the most efficacious project which addresses immediate and long term conditions of the metro region via a 35K CFS (cubic feet/second) diversion.
Items deliberated by the Board as it considered its position included:
1. The flood mitigation measures the community needs to take begin to be a concern for the community and business when the Red River reaches a 28 foot stage.
2. Severe flood events are occurring with greater frequency, with higher stages that current migration efforts can protect against.
3. There is absolute certainty that something MUST be done, as the regional economy is dependent on a stable economic base.
4. Federal participation is critical to fund the size project needed, as there will be hurdles to overcome at the state and local levels.
5. Considering that the 2009 flood event was categorized as a 250 year event (at 40.8 feet), protection needs to be in place for a 500 year event (43.9 feet).
At the July planning meeting, the Chamber’s Regional Issues committee developed a task force to study and recommend alternatives for flood risk reduction and mitigation. This committee continues to meet and will be active in representing the needs and concerns of the members of the Chamber of Commerce of Fargo Moorhead.
