Chamber endorses permanent flood protection
June 29th, 2011 by chamberThe Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce of Fargo Moorhead strongly embraces the concept of permanent flood protection for the Fargo Moorhead community. To allow our community to remain vulnerable to the physical and emotional toll extracted by a major flood, or the financial and economic devastation that can occur as temporary dikes fail, is not acceptable.
Since a “flood protection sales tax” would be funded by approximately 40% of non-Fargo residents, passage of this ballot initiative appears to be the least financially-painful funding mechanism available to Fargo property owners for permanent flood protection to preserve the infrastructure and amenities the entire region enjoys. Without passage of this initiative, the city of Fargo’s need to look at city-wide special assessments would be inevitable.
We are confident the city of Fargo will take a leadership role in facilitating permanent flood protection, and we also encourage the other involved municipalities and jurisdictions to find their necessary funding for permanent protection.
In conclusion, the Board of Directors of the FM Chamber of Commerce strongly endorses permanent flood protection for the Fargo Moorhead community. We encourage Fargo residents to cast their vote on this important issue on Tuesday, June 30, 2009.
