For the first time ever, North Dakota welcomes the National Civics Bee, an annual competition designed to inspire middle school students to deepen their understanding of civics education and engage actively in their communities.

Organized by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the National Civics Bee invites students in grades 6-8 to write essays on civic topics and propose solutions to real-world issues. Through this competition, students gain valuable civic knowledge and skills, empowering them to become informed citizens and engaged members of their communities.

Empowering Future Leaders and Engaged Citizens

Middle school is a crucial time to learn about civic responsibilities and community engagement. The National Civics Bee offers an opportunity for schools to integrate civics education into their curriculum, challenging students to examine current issues and develop thoughtful responses. This firsthand experience in problem-solving helps prepare students for lifelong civic involvement.

A Community Effort: Supporting Civic Education

Community organizations, from libraries to homeschool networks, play an essential role in helping students prepare for the National Civics Bee. Libraries offer a space for students to research civic topics. For homeschoolers, the National Civics Bee offers a structured way to explore civics, encouraging critical thinking and community connection.

Real-World Problem-Solving and Civic Engagement

The National Civics Bee encourages students to apply what they learn to real-world issues, developing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. By analyzing community challenges and proposing actionable solutions, students make civic education relevant and empowering.

A Collaborative Effort from Educators, Government and Community Members

The National Civics Bee is a community-wide initiative involving schools, government, sponsors and families. Judges—often local community leaders—play a key role in nurturing civic-minded students, while corporate sponsors support the event to foster a culture of responsible citizenship. Parents also play a critical part by encouraging their children to participate, making civic learning a family effort.

Why Middle Schoolers Should Get Involved

For sixth, seventh and eighth graders, the National Civics Bee is a chance to explore civic issues, share their ideas and compete for prizes. By participating, students can make a difference, connect with peers who share their interests and begin a journey of active citizenship.

The National Civics Bee in North Dakota highlights young voices and fosters values of democracy, responsibility and community. More than a competition, it’s an investment in our future, ensuring today’s students become tomorrow’s engaged, informed citizens.
