With the FARGODOME expansion and renovation proposal up for a vote, it’s essential that everyone understands the facts before heading to the polls. As with any major project, there are misconceptions and myths circulating that can cloud judgment or lead to confusion. Let’s address some of the most common misunderstandings surrounding the expansion and provide clear, accurate information to help you make an informed decision on the Nov. 5 election.
MYTH: The expansion will only benefit big events.
FACT: While large events such as concerts, expos and sporting events are major draws to the FARGODOME, the expansion is designed with the local community in mind, ensuring year-round value. The proposal includes necessary updates and additions that would support community events, youth sports, conventions and trade shows—creating more opportunities for local businesses, families and organizations to use and benefit from the space. This proposal is a community-focused investment.
MYTH: Property taxes will skyrocket.
FACT: The proposed expansion plan does not involve raising property taxes. Instead, it looks at modest increases in local sales taxes to fund the updates, aiming to spread the financial responsibility across a broader base, including visitors to the city who also benefit from the FARGODOME. This approach is designed to minimize the financial impact on local residents while still generating the funds needed to make the FARGODOME a top-tier facility for years to come.
MYTH: The FARGODOME is already "good enough."
FACT:The FARGODOME has served our community well for years, but as event requirements evolve and demand increases, improvements are needed to maintain its relevance and functionality. The expansion is not about aesthetics or luxury—it addresses essential updates, including better ADA accessibility, upgraded seating and additional space for various events. These updates would enable the FARGODOME to continue attracting high-profile events and support local community needs. Without these improvements, the facility could struggle to keep up with competing venues, limiting its ability to serve residents and attract visitors.
MYTH: There won't be enough events to justify the cost.
FACT: The FARGODOME has a proven track record of hosting events that draw both local and regional attendees. Expanding the facility would allow it to handle a wider variety of events, from national concerts to large-scale conventions, in addition to local gatherings and youth sports tournaments. By enhancing the venue’s capacity and capabilities, the expansion ensures the FARGODOME can maximize its calendar, attracting more events and providing consistent benefits to the community and local economy.
MYTH: The expansion is unnecessary and driven by special interests.
FACT: The expansion proposal is based on extensive feedback from a broad range of stakeholders, including residents, local businesses and event organizers. The goal is to create a more accessible, versatile venue that enhances the FARGODOME’s service to the community. With input from a variety of voices, this proposal reflects what residents, event organizers and community groups have identified as important—ensuring the FARGODOME remains a hub for local activity, economic growth and community gatherings.
MYTH: There's no clear plan for the funding.
FACT: The funding plan for the FARGODOME expansion has been carefully outlined, with transparent, specific details available to the public. By pairing sales tax revenue with existing reserve funds, the proposal aims to balance fiscal responsibility with the need for upgrades. Local leaders are committed to keeping residents informed and engaged every step of the way, ensuring a clear, responsible approach to funding that aligns with the community’s needs and priorities.
